FBI Criminal Background Checks / Departmental Order 556-73 General Information

The federal law that allows this access is referenced in Departmental Order 556-73 (www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/criminal-history-summary-checks). This special access was granted to select FBI contracted channeling companies in July, 2011. Accurate Biometrics is proud to say we were the first FBI approved channeler to offer this personal review service to individuals. Prior to July, 2011, in order for a person to get their own FBI background check, they would have to submit their fingerprints for their personal review using postal mail; a process that takes 6 – 12 weeks.

Today, using Accurate Biometrics’ expedited service, an individual can now receive their personal FBI Rap Sheet within 24 hours of fingerprint processing by Accurate Biometrics, rather than waiting 6 – 12 weeks for the FBI response. We have developed an easy to use customer web portal for quick retrieval of the FBI Rap Sheet. In addition, as an FBI contracted channeling agency, Accurate Biometrics can capture an individual’s fingerprints using livescan fingerprint scanners at any of our locations, or by having the applicant mail in two sets of ink and roll prints on each FD-258 card.

FEDERAL BUREAU of INVESTIGATION NOTIFICATION: Channelers can only process Departmental Orders for US Citizens and Non-US Citizens who have permanent resident status; Non-US Citizens without permanent residence status must make the Departmental Order request directly to the FBI. Finally, please note that inquiries for Departmental Orders must be made by the individual applicant and the FBI response must be sent to the applicant or the applicant’s attorney. If the FBI Rap Sheet is sent to an attorney, a release statement must be signed by both the applicant and attorney on the attorney’s letterhead.
