What is Live Scan?

Live scan is a biometric technology that electronically captures and digitally transmits scanned fingerprints securely to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and FBI. With digital fingerprinting, there is no messy ink or paper card. Your fingerprints are “rolled” across a glass plate and scanned. It is faster, cleaner and more accurate than the old ink card method. Our advanced equipment allows criminal background checks to be processed usually within 72 hours.

Accurate Live Scan Fingerprint Submissions Guaranteed!

Alive Scan utilizes the best quality biometrics equipment to assure the best possible fingerprint results. It is important to choose an experienced fingerprint roller to avoid rejections and lengthy delays. Many live scan service providers are inexperienced (such as a random employee at a postal store) which could result in lengthy delays. Whether you need our services for employment, certification or licensing purposes, you will find our electronic fingerprint service to be top notch and our customer service to be unsurpassed.

Who needs Live Scan Fingerprinting?

Live Scan is simply electronic fingerprinting which uses biometrics for the purpose of running criminal background checks. It is required for most California State Licensing Agencies – Real Estate, Insurance, Security, Teachers, Nurses… In addition, many CA employers and schools require criminal background checks on their employees. If you need fingerprinting for out-of-state or federal purposes, we provide the required “Ink Fingerprinting” services.

How Much Does Live Scan Cost?

The total cost for fingerprinting varies, depending on the Department of Justice processing fees. Our fee for electronically capturing your fingerprints (rolling fee) and submitting your information is only $28.00. In addition to this rolling fee, applicants are sometimes required to pay processing fees charge by the DOJ and/or FBI to run the criminal history report. Occasionally the processing fees are paid for by an employer. Also, volunteers and non-profit organizations may be exempt from the processing fees. As you can see there is no one-cost-fits-all answer. Please contact us for an accurate quote for your particular situation.

Approved Law Enforcement Alternative to Ink Fingerprinting

Alive Scan is fully certified by the California Department of Justice (DOJ) for fingerprinting. Many of our applicants are originally instructed to go to their local police department or sheriff office to be fingerprinted. However, California law enforcement migrated away from providing a fingerprint service to the public in 2005. Alive Scan is now San Diego’s trusted alternative for live-scan & ink fingerprinting. Our facility is often referred to by local police departments and sheriff offices.

Purpose of Background Checks

Securing a criminal background check prior to employment, licensure, or certification provides a hiring or licensing authority an important resource, which aids in the evaluation of the applicant. These applicants are often candidates for positions that place them in a position of trust for some of California’s most vulnerable citizenry, elderly, and dependent adults and children. As such, it is vital for the hiring or licensing authority to be aware of specified active arrests or convictions.

California Department of Justice

The DOJ compares fingerprints to compiled records of arrest and prosecution, known as “RAP sheets,” for individuals and disseminates the information employment and licensing purposes. RAP sheets are based upon fingerprint submissions, and therefore positively identified biometrically; a process by which a person’s unique identity is confirmed.
